Lake Havasu City’s Thunderbolt Middle School does it again. They are the only one of nine local schools to receive and retain the state’s highest academic label of top achievement. Out of nine schools across the Lake Havasu Unified School District, Thunderbolt Middle School has once again received an “excelling” label, which is based on student’s state exam scores.
Of the five elementary schools in the district to receive the “excelling” label last year, all are now “high performing” schools. Havasupai Elementary was the only school to raise their academic status over the year. Havasupai was a “performing plus” school last year; this year it has been recognized as a “high performing” school.
This is excellent news for families with children who are seeking to relocate to a community with a high achieving education system.
The Arizona Department of Education gives one of five academic labels to schools each year. From this, schools can be judged either underperforming, performing, performing plus, high performing or excelling. This is how the state holds each school accountable, and results are released to the public yearly.
The academic labels set by the state look at the percentage of students who are passing Arizona’s Instrument to Measure Standards, which is the state’s required exam for high school graduation. Labels also take a look at how schools are improved, graduation rates, and English Language Learner proficiency.
